Periodontal Disease: More Common Than You Think

Dental disease can take many forms, but the most common is periodontal disease, which refers to the infection of the tissues holding the teeth in place. In fact, periodontal disease is the most common disease affecting both cats and dogs. If this disease progresses or is left untreated, your pet can experience loose teeth or, in advanced cases, damage to their jaw bone.

Periodontal disease is caused by a buildup of plaque on the teeth. Plaque is a bacterial film which clings to the teeth and can be dislodged by regular brushing. When plaque dies, it hardens on the teeth and provides more surface area for new plaque to cling to. As more and more plaque builds up, it can move below the gum line and can get under the teeth, where it can cause infections and pain.

Your pet may have periodontal disease if:

  • Their breath is particularly smelly
  • There is blood in their saliva or water dish
  • They have loose teeth
  • They have trouble eating

Brushing your pet’s teeth at home can help prevent periodontal disease as can regular visits to your Montclair veterinarian.

Dental Cleanings at Montclair Animal Hospital

During an oral exam, if we notice your pet is suffering from a more advanced case of periodontal disease, we may recommend a professional dental cleaning under general anesthesia. As an American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) accredited animal hospital, we are fully equipped with a surgical suite and anesthesia monitoring equipment to keep your pet safe during their cleaning.

Dental cleaning at Montclair Animal Hospital includes:

  • Scaling your pet’s teeth to remove plaque
  • Polishing your pet’s teeth after the plaque has been removed
  • Applying an anti-plaque treatment to help prevent future plaque buildup

After your pet’s teeth are clean, we’ll keep an eye on them as they come out from under their general anesthesia. We’ll give you a call when it’s time to pick them up and go home.

When you pick up your pet, we’ll give you tips to keep your pet’s smile sparkling all year-round. Maintenance is key to making sure your pet’s smile is as happy and healthy as the rest of them.

If you have questions or concerns about your pet’s oral health, don’t wait! Call (703) 878-3442 or contact us online so we can help.
